Best Wall Insulation: Exterior vs. Interior

Imagine the following scenario: You come home from a long day at work and flop down in your favorite armchair, ready for some peace and quiet. But all you hear are cars honking and a dog barking outside and the TV playing upstairs. Being comfortable in your home doesn’t just mean maintaining a comfortable temperature!

Everyone knows the energy-savings benefits insulation offers—but did you know wall insulation can help provide a more comfortable indoor environment, in terms of both temperature and soundproofing? To minimize these annoying noises, you need both exterior and interior wall insulation.

What Is the Best Exterior Wall Insulation?

As one of the biggest sources of air leaks, your exterior walls need to be insulated and sealed. All exterior walls should be insulated, including foundation walls (above ground and in heated basements) and walls between living spaces and an unconditioned garage or shed roof.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, your best exterior wall insulation options are:

  • Blown-in fiberglass (can be added to exterior walls without a lot of disturbance to finished areas in the home)
  • Two-part spray foam or wet spray cellulose (for open wall cavities during a remodel)
  • Injectable spray foam (for wall cavities that won’t be open)

While blanket insulation tends to be a more affordable option, it won’t provide as much air sealing and thermal efficiency as spray foam. Insulated concrete blocks and rigid foam are often used for new homes being built.

What Is the Best Interior Wall Insulation?

Although many unwanted sounds occur outside the house (traffic, neighbors’ pets, etc.), there are plenty of noises you want to muffle inside as well, from footsteps, TV, and loud voices to flushing toilets and vibrations from the washing machine.

Ideal interior wall insulation options include:
