How Much Insulation Does My Austin, TX Home Need?

What Is Insulation R-Value?

R-value refers to insulation’s ability to resist or stop the flow of heat. Simply put, it’s any material’s resistance to heat flow. That means insulation with a higher R-value insulates your home better than materials with a lower R-value.

How Is Insulation R-Value Calculated?

Manufacturers calculate a product’s R-value by measuring the temperature on each surface of the material in question, where each side is set to a specific temperature. This is the best way to determine how much heat energy is flowing through the material.

What R-Value Is Best for My Home?

The “R” stands for “resistance,” so R-value is how effective an insulation material is at preventing, or resisting, heat transfer. While it might seem right to just buy insulation with the highest R-value you can afford, that’s not always what’s right for your home. It depends on your home’s climate. For example, your Austin, TX, home will need a very different type and insulation rating than a home in Alaska would.

That’s why every region in the U.S. has a recommended insulation level, as you can see from the map below.

Color-coded map of the U.S. by R-value regions.

Austin, TX is in Zone 2, which requires R-30 to R-60 for uninsulated attics and R-25 to R-38 for attics that already have a few inches of insulation. Read more about insulating your attic on the ENERGY STAR® website.

What Insulation Should I Install in My Home?

The most important areas of your home to insulate are your home’s attic and exterior walls. We recommend using one of these insulation types for your home:
