About Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass is made of tiny glass fibers and has been used to insulate homes and buildings for decades. It’s available as blown-in/loose-fill or batt/blanket insulation and can be installed in many different areas of a home. Blown-in fiberglass is ideal for existing enclosed walls, open new wall cavities, unfinished attic floors and hard-to-reach areas. Batt fiberglass is typically used for unfinished walls (including foundation walls), floors and ceilings.

Batt Insulation

Batt or blanket insulation is the most common and widely available type of insulation and can be found in many homes. They can be installed in 2 feet by 4 feet and 2 feet by 6 feet walls. They are designed for easy installation and ideal for spaces free of obstructions. Batts with a special flame-resistant facing are available in various widths for basement walls and other places where the insulation will be left exposed. Facings aren’t always necessary; for example, unfaced batt insulation should be used when adding new material over existing layers.

Blown-In Insulation

Loose-fill or blown-in fiberglass is also suitable for many areas of a home. It’s made of small particles of fiber or other materials formed together to conform to any space without disturbing finishes or structures. Because of this, blown-in insulation can fit in more awkwardly shaped or hard-to-reach areas than batts. Blown-in fiberglass is also made using recycled waste materials and can contain up to 30% recycled glass.

Fiberglass insulation can help:

  • Reduce your energy bills and maximize the energy efficiency of your home or building
  • Make your home or building more comfortable year-round
  • Reduce noises from both outside and inside and between different rooms and levels
  • Improve the performance of your air conditioner and furnace
  • Protect against air and moisture infiltration (and help eliminate mold growth)
  • Contribute to a healthier environment

Fiberglass Insulation R-Value

Standard fiberglass blankets and batts have a thermal resistance or R-value between R-2.9 and R-3.8 per inch of thickness. High-performance (medium-density and high-density) fiberglass blankets and batts have R-values between R-3.7 and R-4.3 per inch of thickness.
